Lawndale, is an ongoing project that began in 2012 while I volunteered in North Lawndale as a teaching artist at Herzl Elementary in Chicago, Illinois. This past fall I returned to continue documenting the community curious as to what could have changed. I partnered with Building Better Futures and worked alongside their efforts in the area. As I worked I found a tension between the residents in the neighborhood and the violence that so often surrounds them. Lawndale invites the detached outsider, such as myself, to see beyond the violent news headlines and come face-to-face with the reality of those who live there.
